IPT NOVA GORICA - ABOUT

NOVA GORICA

Nova Gorica is a new town, built in 1948 in the west of Slovenia, on the Italian border. The town, which has a population of 32,763, has changed its design frequently during its fast expansion. Of the initial plan of a “City in a park” about two hundred species of local and exotic trees and shrubs are preserved, which is without any doubt a noteworthy peculiarity. To the south of the town lies Kostanjevica Hill, home to a 17th-century Franciscan monastery and the Church of The Annunciation of Our Lady where lies the mortal remains of the last members of the French dynasty of Bourbon, among these also the last King of France, Charles X. Opposite Kostanjevica Hill, north of the town is Sveta Gora (Holy Mountain), a peak of 682 m. The view from here is exceptional, and on a clear day visitors can see as far as Istria, Venice, the Dolomites, and the Kamnik and Julian Alps. The mountain top is home to a magnificent basilica, where concerts are occasionally held, a Franciscan monastery, and a museum of the Battles of the Isonzo. The traditional tourist farms and the so-called “osmice – the Eights”, wine cellars where in the past the wine of the previous year was sold eight days a year, are a suitable address for people enjoying the rich Primorska cuisine. The mild climate enables excellent ripening of the grapes and it provides wines of a unique bouquet such as Zelen, Pinela, Malvazija and Rebula.
